SUMMARY:REACH 2023 Water Security and Poverty Conference
DESCRIPTION:On 20-22 September\, the REACH international conference convened leaders from government\, industry\, academia\, finance\, and civil society to define the water security agenda to 2030 and beyond. Sessions explored how the latest science is shaping policy and practice to address key challenges on climate services\, sustainable finance and water quality at local and regional scales. \nIn a session on ‘Tools for Measuring Women’s Empowerment and Agency in the Water Sector’ aiming to look at a suite of new survey tools designed to provide insights into relationships between empowerment and water security\, Dr. Elijah Bisung and Dr. Sarah Dickin presented experiences applying the Empowemrent in WASH Index in WASH research and practice. Other modules on measuring women’s agency developed in collaboration with the World Bank MAGNET project were presented by Dr Maria Hernandez de Benito\, Universidad de Alicante and Dr Marya Hillesland\, University of Oxford. The session was chaired by Dr. Cheryl Doss (Tufts University) with Dr. Ana Gren (World Bank Climate Change Group) as discussant.

SUMMARY:UN Water Conference 2023: How to make the Water Action Agenda gender transformative: connecting policy\, practice\, and research
DESCRIPTION:The first UN water conference in 50 years was held in 2023. Together with Simavi\, the Ugandan Ministry of Water and Environment\, the Uganda Water and Sanitation Network (UWASNET)\, the African Civil Society Network for Water and Sanitation (ANEW)\, the government of the Netherlands\, and the Water Integrity Network\, SEI co-hosted an official Side Event at the UN Water Conference to discuss learning around addressing gender in water and sanitation policy\, practice and research. The side event aimed to share good practices related to integrating gender as well as highlight knowledge and practice gaps. A focus was on gender transformative approaches that seek to address power relations. Sarah Dickin presented recent work on measuring empowerment in collaboration with Simavi to highlight the importance of more research on women’s empowerment in the water sector. \n  \nFor a more in-depth discussion of how the UN Water Conference integrated gender please read this associated perspective article: https://www.sei.org/perspectives/the-next-water-action-agenda-must-be-gender-transformative/ \n  \nFollowing the Conference\, commitments made by different stakeholders were collected to produce the Water Action Agenda. Out of 842 commitments\, 3 commitments mention a commitment to gender transformative action.

SUMMARY:World Water Week 2019: Strategic approaches to integrating and measuring gender dimensions
DESCRIPTION:At World Water Week in Stockholm in 2019\, Sarah Dickin presented the Empowerment in WASH Index (EWI) tool to WASH practitioners\, policy-makers and researchers. This session was co-convened with BMGF\, Biomass Controls\, Duke University\, SEI\, University of Cranfield\, UTS and WaterAid. The aim was to share tools\, new methodologies and applied case studies drawn from a number of global teams that are striving to advance gender inclusion and empowerment in WASH. This work fills a gap in R&D\, technology adoption\, and program implementation and monitoring in how to evaluate and foster a gender lens into activities in the WASH sector\, ensuring no one is left behind. \nWe used a world café format to discuss different tools. In addition to the the EWI\, the other cases included: India On-site MHM and Water Reuse (Myles Elledge\, Biomass Controls); India Public Toilet Design and Uganda Girls School Toilet Lighting (Alison Parker\, Cranfield University); WASH Gender Equality Measure (Juliet Willetts\, UTS); and Integrating Gender Indicators for Tracking WASH Services (Chelsea Huggett\, WaterAid).
