Piloting the EWI
The original development and piloting of the Empowerment in WASH Index (EWI) tool was conducted in Ghana and Burkina Faso, in collaboration with the WASH NGO IRC, funded by a REACH Accelerated grant (FCDO). To develop and adapt the indicators from the Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI), concept mapping methods were used to elicit domains of empowerment from stakeholders, ensuring that the tool was contextually relevant for the WASH sector. This piloting and testing activities were conducted alongside the development district water and sanitation plans, and provided novel insight for local decision-makers on gendered considerations to include in these plans.
